is a non-governmental, non-profit organization with a goal of improving the opportunities for children and young people. We care about the social and economic development of the youth in Ethiopia, as we believe that young people are our best hope and investing in them is an investment for the future. ECYDO was initially established as a Theatre and Music Club in 1987 employing the artistic talents of street vendors and other vulnerable children to convey messages on HIV/AIDS. Working with the street children and young people convinced the founders to advance the Club to Eshet Children and Youth Unity Association. This initiative was set in-view of addressing the socio-economic concerns of children and youth mainly through awareness creation on Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS, and facilitating access to SRH and Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) services. The now ECYDO has passed through a range of organizational development processes. In 2000, it was formerly registered under the Addis Ababa City Government (AACG) as Youth Association. In 2001, ECYDO has become a Youth NGO and registered by the Ministry of Justice, in 2002, it made an operational agreement with Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission (DPPC). It has also signed a project agreement with AACG Civil Society and NGO Affairs Office and Addis Ababa Health Bureau. Currently, ECYDO is re-registered and licensed by the Federal Civil Society Organization’s Agency with Number 0095 according to the new Civil society organization’s legislation 1113/2019 as a local civil society to operate in Addis Ababa, Oromia, Amhara, SNNPR, and Benishangul-Gumuz regions. Since its beginnings, the organization has reached over 80,000 young people in Ethiopia with the same strategy – tapping the young talent in the fight against poverty and unwanted phenomena in SRH, and in challenging rooted men-centered attitudes in the society. ECYDO focuses on young people both from urban and rural areas and other disadvantaged groups. It co-operates with other NGOs via umbrella organizations’ Consortium of Reproductive Health Associations (CORHA) and the Consortium of Youth Development Organization in Ethiopia (CoYDOE). This enables the best practice sharing and efforts coordination throughout Ethiopia and contribution to the worldwide women empowerment, SRHR, and poverty-reduction movements.
